This image was taken for Bulger Partners, a boutique financial consulting group in Boston. Bulger is a young company with tech-savvy team members. Our job was to show small groups collaborating to come up with solutions and to present the company as a fun and exciting place to work.
You can’t ask business people to pose in the way you’ve envisioned – it just looks fake. You have to choose vibrant groups and allow them to organically get excited about what they’re doing. You can see the authenticity in the expressions and body language, which is much more convincing than if we had posed the employees. Using natural light also allows you, the photographer, to be more of a “fly on the wall” rather than reminding them they’re having their picture taken with every flash of the strobes. I’ve been lighting situations for 30 years, and there is no substitute for sunshine-lit spaces – it just feels right. These images are being used on the company website and recruitment brochures.
